Reclaiming Jane Trailer
The first taste of Reclaiming Jane, in which hosts Emily Davis-Hale and Lauren Wethers introduce themselves, the concept of the podcast, and the premiere date.
Transcript:
E: I’m Emily Davis-Hale --
L: And I’m Lauren Wethers, and this is Reclaiming Jane, an Austen podcast for fans on the margins.
E: If you’ve ever felt like you can’t be a fan of Jane Austen -- maybe because her work is too white, too straight, or too academic -- this podcast is for you.
L: You don’t have to be a history buff or an English major to love Jane Austen...although both of us fit at least one of those labels. I’m a queer black woman with a master’s degree in English literature, so I’ve spent a lot of time reading and loving books that aren’t necessarily “for me.”
E: And I’m a nonbinary queer anthropologist with a passion for the history of people who don’t make it into the textbooks.
L: We’re going through the Austen canon in chronological order to discover new ways of reading old texts.
E: Each episode, we’ll use a different theme to guide our reading, letting us focus on representations of race, sexuality, and everything in between.
L: We’ll talk about the historical context of each book, draw connections to pop culture, and debate which characters were definitely queer.
E: Our first episode will premiere on December 16, Jane Austen’s 245th birthday, and we’ll be reading the first five chapters of Sense and Sensibility with a focus on power.
L: Whether you’re a long-time Austen fan or have never read a word of her writing, we hope you’ll join us in Reclaiming Jane.
