If you’ve ever felt like you’re not “allowed” to like Jane Austen – whether because her work is too white, too academic, or too straight – we’ve been there. And this podcast is for you.

Each episode, we use a different theme to guide our reading, letting us focus on representations of sexuality, race, and everything in between. We’re going through the Austen canon book by book to give you the historical context of each work, draw connections to pop culture, and discover new ways of interpreting old texts.

There’s something in Jane Austen’s novels for everyone. Whether you’re a long-time Austen devotee or have never read a single word of her writing, we hope you’ll join us.

Pour a cup of tea and stay awhile.

Emily Davis-Hale is a consummate word nerd who somehow avoided most of Jane Austen until now. With a BA, MA, and in-progress PhD in linguistic anthropology, they try to read Austen from a perspective beyond literary analysis. Their social media (Twitter: @e_davishale, Instagram: @em.provised) is mostly flailing in the general direction of language/history/advocacy/crafting.

With a B.A. in English and Spanish, an M.A. in English, and a minor in film studies, Lauren Wethers spent her time in college learning how to be pretentious in two different languages. She uses that fancy education to yell about plot holes on Twitter and moonlight as both a freelance and fiction writer. She has written for sites like Screen Rant and USA Today College and has a pop culture reference for almost everything. You can follow her unsolicited hot takes on Twitter (@laurenwethers) or visit her website to learn about her career coaching and writing.
